Iconic Indian batsman Sachin
Tendulkar might soon add to
the over-flowing accolades
he has already received in his
career, with possibly the
highest one of them all - the
Bharat Ratna.
Media reports quoted sources
as saying that the Prime
Minister's Office (PMO) has
recommended Tendulkar's
name for the award, which is
India's highest civilian
honour.
Tendulkar will be the first
sportsman of the country to
get the award, if he does get
it. There were some
reservations on handing the honour to Tendulkar,
keeping in mind his age (he would be amongst the
youngest to have been awarded the Bharat Ratna if he
does get it) and the fact that he had received the Padma
Vibhushan just two years ago, but sources said that
Tendulkar is very likely to receive the Bharat Ratna.
A few days ago, Member of Parliament Sanjay Nirupam
had said, "We have strongly recommended Sachin's
name for the Bharat Ratna, and we should know the
result in a few days."
In addition, Information and Broadcasting Minister
Ambika Soni also voiced her support for Tendulkar
getting the award. "Every Indian wishes that a youth
icon like Sachin should get Bharat Ratna. It's my personal
wish also that Sachin should get Bharat Ratna," she said.
The man himself though, merely said that it would be a
huge honour and didn't speculate on whether he would
get it or not.
"It is a rare honour but I am focusing on cricket. If it has
to happen, it will happen. It is every Indians dream to
make the country proud," Tendulkar said.
Meanwhile, Tendulkar's long-time team-mate and
architect of some of India's most famous wins, VVS
Laxman, was conferred with the Padma Shree.
Both Tendulkar and Laxman have had stellar years in
2010, with Tendulkar scoring a double century in ODIs,
and racking up 1562 runs (the highest tally of 2010) in
Tests at an average of 78.10, while Laxman - who plays
only Test matches for India - making 939 runs at an
average of 67.07.
